Halloween
Please note that students will not attend school on Friday, October 31st.  As Halloween is celebrated on this date, students will the opportunity to participate in dressing -up on the Thursday afternoon of October 30th.

If students would like, they may bring costumes which they can change into for the afternoon. For safety reasons, masks and weapons are not allowed to be part of the dress. As well, please do not send treats to school due to allergies, but save them for the trick-or-treaters of the Vista Heights community.

Determination!
Our virtue for October is Determination. Today we read the story The Little Engine that Could, where a happy little train breaks down and the clown and elephant are in despair. Please ask your child: What happened in the story? How did the little engine show determination?

Here are some questions you can discuss at home:
  1. How can you show determination when you are doing your home reading or chores?
  2. How do you feel after finishing a hard task?
  3. How can you make healthy choices this week?

We have been studying the old European Folktale, 'Something From Nothing' illustrated by Phoebe Gilman.

Joseph's grandfather made him a beautiful blanket when he was a baby, but now it's frazzled and worn, and Joseph's mother says it is time to throw it out. Joseph doesn't want to part with his special blanket, and he's sure that his grandfather can fix it. Sure enough, Grandfather miraculously alters the blanket into useful items again and again. But when Joseph loses the final item, even Grandfather can't make something from nothing.

Please ask your child if Joseph can make 'Something from Nothing' ?

Can you make something from nothing?
Please talk about  Something that you could make from nothing.
Share your idea tomorrow morning.

Hot Soup Tomorrow

The soup was delicious but If your child was still hungry on Tuesday,

Introducing from Ms. Toor's class....

Throughout the year we will watch these fish grow and possibly add more!
We will do a lot of scientific observations just like we did today! For example, what do you see in the tank? What do you notice the fish doing? Do you remember what schooling fish are?

Our Home Reading Program starts this week!
In your child's backpack please locate the home reading/communication folder. In this folder you will find two piece of paper and a home reading book. The first sheet includes some strategies to support to sound out words. The back page includes some comprehension questions you can ask your child during and after they finish reading.

On the home reading log, please fill in (or have your child fill in) the information. Please assess whether or not the book was easy to read, just right, or too hard. This will help us in determining what kind of books should be sent home the next time.

This home reading program will work in conjunction with the Raz-Kids program. If your child has read books on Raz-Kids, they are not required to read the paper book. If they have read the paper book, they are not required to read on Raz-Kids.

Early literacy is so important and we appreciate your support in your child's learning!
