The May news letter went home with students today.

The students in grades 1/2 are looking forward to our field trip to the zoo on May 11. In preparation for our trip, we have been learning about penguins through both fiction and non fiction books. Today the students read the book the Emperor's Egg by Martin Jenkins. This is a fiction book which provides the reader with many interesting facts. Did you know that there are 17 species of penguins and that the Emperor penguin is the largest of them all?

Please return all field trip permission forms to school by May 6th.

Thank you to Ms. Toor who found two wonderful web cams which allows the students to observe penguins up close.

The Montrey Bay Aquarium has a web cam which allows you to view their penguin display.

If you log on to the follow address at either 11:30 am or at 4:00 pm you and your child can enjoy watching the zoo keepers feed the penguins. The keeper also provides an informative presentation about the penguins.

A nesting Magellanic penguin can be observed sitting on it's egg on the following web cam:

Notice Coming Home today from Mrs. Sagness
Grade 1 and 2 choir club is beginning next week and some children expressed an interest. If you would like your child to be a part of this club, please sign and return the pink form that came home today with your child by May 6th. The club will start May 6 to June 3 and will take place each Wednesday at lunch.

Today we read the story, Hairy, Scary, Ordinary by Brian Clearly as we continue our exploration of power words.

Can you think of some adjectives to describe this little friend of ours that lives in our community? Thanks for capturing this picture Mrs. Malik!

Just a friendly reminder that the hot soup program ended last week. Please continue to send healthy lunches with your child each day :)

Today the students read an insightful book called Anh's Anger.

The story is about a young boy who becomes very angry when his tower of blocks is knocked over. As a result of his angry outburst his grandfather sends him to his room and asks him to "sit with his anger."

While alone in his room Anh comes to know his anger as they dance around the room and then sit down together to learn the power of taking deep breaths when extreme emotion becomes overpowering.

As Anh gets to know his anger he is successful in  making it grow smaller and smaller and eventually it goes away.

Plane Shapes
&
Solid Shapes

As part of our study of plane shapes and solid shapes,
we read the following book which demonstrated how artists used these forms in their pieces of art.
Name the shapes that you see on the cover of the book.

Although students are familiar with the most common shapes, now they are learning to verbalize what distinguishes a square from a rectangle or a circle from a triangle. They describe shapes in terms of their sides and corners.

As with plane shapes, children are learning to describe solid shapes in terms of their attributes, such as their roundness or flatness, their ability to roll or slide, and the number of sides or corners. They will also come to see how the plane shapes comprise the faces of solid shapes.

Over the next few weeks, please ask your child  to identify the names of solids in your environment.

i.e.: fridge - rectangular prism, ball - sphere, dice - cube
