Today we had our Remembrance Day assembly. Students learned some facts about wars that Canada has been a part of. Mr. Sheill's played the bagpipes - Thank you Mr. Sheill's.

Our school observed a moment of silence after listening to the last post. During this time, we thought about how we can make our community of Vista Heights and Calgary a peaceful place. Please ask your child what they think we can do?

At the assembly some students from grade 1 and 2 had a chance to show their work. If you missed it, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QKlUXAuwYQ

Reminders
- There is no school on Monday due to a system wide PD Day
- There is no school on Tuesday due to Remembrance Day

Due to the extra long weekend, Mr. Beattie, Mrs. Queen and Ms. Toor have a challenge for our students! Students have been challenged to read at least one book each day they are not at school! That is one book on Saturday, one on Sunday, one on Monday and one on Tuesday! Books can be ones from your personal library, on Raz Kids, home reading books sent home, or even books from the Calgary Public Library (cards are free for students)! Please support your child in accomplishing this challenge!

Please note: the weather may change over the weekend, leading to colder temperatures. Please note that students will only be kept in for recess and lunch if the temperature is -20 or below. Thanks for making sure that your child is wearing everything they need to stay warm outside :)

Remembrance Day
Tomorrow we will be having our remembrance day assembly beginning promptly at 10:40. Parents
are welcome to join. Please discuss with your child appropriate behaviour during this somber remembrance day assembly (ex. no clapping, sitting quietly, no cheering, etc). We will also be taking part in a moment of silence at 11:00am.

We are still collecting non-perishable food items for donation to the veterans food bank and coins for poppies.

NOTE: Due to a system wide PD day, there will be no school on Monday, November 10. Due to Remembrance Day, there will be no school on Tuesday November 11.

What does Peace feel like?

In preparation of Remembrance Day, students have been thinking about peace and what it means to them. Students have been using their 5 senses to think about what peace feels, smells like, tastes like, looks like and sounds like. Students were very creative in some of their responses. Enjoy!

Please ask your chid

What does peace feel like?
What does peace smell like?
What does peace taste like?
What does peace look like?
What does peace sound like?

Here are some samples from Ms. Toor's class

Today we learned more about our sense of hearing and it was exciting! We discovered that there are many parts inside our ears and brain that help us hear. After reading the book Listening Walk by Paul Showers we went on a listening walk outside in the school yard. We were very surprised by the number of sounds we could hear. Ask me what sounds I heard on our walk today.

For homework tonight:
Listen to the sounds that you hear at home.
Do you hear some of the same sounds we heard on our walk?
Do you hear new sounds that we did not hear on our walk?

Make a list of the sounds you hear at home and bring it to school.

This year, our Grade 1&2 classes have been chosen to be a part of the  LIttle Green Thumbs program which is run through the Calgary Zoo with generous corporate support. Over the course of the year we will be planting seeds, transplanting seedlings and growing various vegetables in a classroom garden.

Today we have started with the first step of setting up our compost bin with about a thousand red wiggler worms. Please ask your child to explain what they have learned?

Why are earthworms helpful for growing plants in a garden?

Why do we need to make holes in the top and bottom of the bin?

What foods will we feed the worms?

Please read this chart and explain some of the important facts that you learned about earthworms.

On Friday, November 7 at 10:40 our school will be holding a Remembrance Day service.  Each morning this week, we will be

Collecting non perishable food items for our CanadianVeterans'
                                 &
Accepting coin donations for Poppies (nickels, dimes, quarters and loonies) Poppies will be distributed to students prior to the
Assembly

Families are welcomed to join us in Friday's ceremony.

As noted on Thursday's blog, our students were grouping and counting the pumpkin seeds in many different ways.  The students in the photos below, organized the seeds in groups of two, five and ten.

The students said "We found it easiest to count by tens, then fives and twos were the hardest."

.
In class, we are using various manipulatives i.e. blocks, tags, even cheerios  to  practice forming groups of 2s, 5s, 10s and then counting these amounts.

Please use any items from your home to practice counting as high as you can by twos, fives, & tens.

If your family would like to take a photo and e-mail it to us, we can put it on the SmartBoard and students can practice counting your items.
