What a busy day!
Today we had Jaclyn from Little Green Thumbs come in and work with our students build terrariums. Here, Jaclyn is talking about what a terrarium needs!

Here is a sample she built for us! Notice the bag will act like the green house

Watch as Jaclyn TRANSPORTS the plant to the base.

Thanks for visiting Jaclyn! We will take care of our plants!

From Ms. Toor's Class
Julie has been sharing more about her aboriginal culture. Yesterday she talked about a Pow Wow and explained what they do there. Here is a link to one of the pow wow's from the Piikani Nation - where Julie is from! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QC273SxeHU

She showed us a dance and explained how the boys do different foot steps then the girls.

Today, Julie brought in her dance feather and shared it with Ms. Toor's class.

Kananaskis in the Classroom

This morning, our school had an engaging school assembly,
called 'Planet Earth Hummingbirds', from Kananaskis in the Classroom!

What is special about a male Rufous hummingbird?

Our students brainstormed some of the facts that they had learned from the presentation.

have long beaks and a tongue that wraps around inside their skull
- suck up a lot of nectar from flowers and eats insects
- lay two eggs that are the size of jelly beans
-the nest stretches when the female lays the eggs
- the female raises the little birds without any help from the male
- the baby hummingbirds are full grown by two months
- can fly in one spot (hover), fly backwards and even upside down
- torpor sleeping - heart rate drops
- migration route  Kananaskis - Mexico - Kananaskis
- humans are destroying their habitat, so, they can not eat enough and can not make the trip
- a male and female have a courting dance

The Kanananskis representative visited our classrooms and shared additional information
and some of the artifacts from the park. In the photo above students are comparing the various nests that have been created by different birds.

Ask your child about which facts the found most interesting.
