Calgary Public Library Cards!
Coming home today are FREE Calgary Public Library Cards!
Free custom cards are being distributed to all students and school staff within the Calgary Board of Education as part of the Calgary Public Library’s pledge to remove barriers to literacy.

“The path to literacy begins before a child reaches five years of age,” said Bill Ptacek, Calgary Public Library CEO, “and sets the stage for a strong future. By making Library cards free to all Calgarians, we’re challenging parents to model the reading habit to their children by picking up their own free Library cards and getting families reading together.”

Visit calgarylibrary.ca to register your card today! Or visit any Calgary Public Library locations near you.

Here are list of locations near our school:

Thursday, 5 February 2015

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching.  We don’t have school on Feb. 14th, so we will do a few friendship activities on Feb. 11th instead.   As a writing activity, your child may wish to give a card to classmates, whether store bought or homemade. As always, participation is completely optional. If your child does participate we ask that he/she provide a card for EVERY student in the class. Please have your child print all text independently.  Though we appreciate your kindness, please do not send any other treats or snacks.

Have you filled a bucket today?
Please visit the following link to listen to the have you filled a bucket today story.

Please ask your child:  How can you fill a bucket? How have you filled a bucket today?

Hello Parents - The School Council has a Casino to help supply the school with all the programs and equipment our children have grown accustom to using at Vista Heights Elementary. Your parent council has found quite a number of volunteer from outside the school, but we still need people for a number of positions. Please come in to the school and sign up, or call Chad Hande at 403-291-5272. Thank you so much for your help.

 Understanding

We read the book,

What did Mooch want to buy for his friend?

                                                       Ask me to explain "nothing"
We discussed that a present is not the only gift that you can give a friend...

The most important thing is understanding what your friend needs....
Ask me what Earl wanted for a present?
Spending time with a friend and taking care of a friend
                                            He just needed love

We read the book,

Ask me what I learnt about compassion and caring.......?
Ask me to tell you a few things that we can do to show that we understand....?

Ask me how I can show I understand how he feels...

We are going to the gymAsk me what we need to do?
CHANGE OUR PLAN...... give a helping hand and UNDERSTAND
                                        our friend needs us more....

How can we be understanding to other people?

...help our friends                               ..cheer up our friends if they are sad

    Little Green Thumbs

Today students of our Grade1/2 classes created various scientific experiments and growing projects under the guidance of Little Green Thumbs coordinator Ms. Jaclyn Angotti of the Calgary Zoo.

Pea Germination Experiment

Students have placed a seed of a pea in a wet paper towel..
Then each seed and wet towel was placed in a paper bag
and put in area of the classroom
that was selected by the student.

                                                     Which will germinate faster?
In an area of the room that is warm, cool, cold or hot?

What does water do to a
  hard dry seed?

A small clear plastic bottle has been filled with tiny round pea seeds. Water has been added, filling in all the empty spaces between the seeds.
Finally, the top has been secured on the plastic bottle.

These students are checking out the changes in the seeds.
What do you think will happen to the seeds and bottle?

Please return the Report Card envelope to our class.
Thank you
