Students discussed the book' What's the Difference Between a Butterfly and a Moth.

One of the differences,

'watch the insect land and come to rest. Are the wings pointed to the sky or held flat over the insect's body? Most of the time a butterfly's wings are pointed upward.

A moth's wings usually are held over its body when the insect is at rest.

Please ask your child what are some of the other differences between butterflies and moths?

Some students have brought caterpillars to school, one of them recently built a cocoon.
What do you think will emerge, a butterfly or moth?

Some students have begun to write about the differences between the butterflies and moths. Here is some of their writing.

Today, Friday June 12th is the last day for students to borrow books from the Learning Commons. Please return all books next week.
Thank you

Sorry for the missed blog yesterday!

Mrs. Queen has introduced us to a wonderful book by Dr. Seuss - My, Oh My - a Butterfly!

Aaron in Mrs. Queens class spotted an amazing discovery in our very own Garden of Peace. Mr. Beattie and Mrs. Toor's class went out to share in the exploration....

What did we find?

Georgia found a green caterpillar! Notice how it moves...We wonder if it will become a butterfly or a moth?

We keep searching...

Found something!!! We found an egg! We were curious why it wasn't on the bottom of the leaf...

Good find Julie! I wonder if this is the same one that Aaron found earlier...

Mrs. Malik shows us another one! This one was on the bottom of the leaf...we noticed it looked a bit different...can you tell?

While searching, we found another! What fun!

In math we have been learning about symmetry.  The students in room 1 read the book "Seeing Symmetry" by Loreen Leedy. We discovered that there are many things around us that are symmetrical.  Butterflies, people, flowers, and the Taj  Mahal are just a few examples.

We applied our understanding of symmetry to create our own butterfly designs. Notice how both wings have identical patterns.

Enjoy our butterflies!

Update from the learning commons: This week is our LAST week to exchange books from the learning commons. Each week, Mrs. Reimer reads a story to our classes. Often times, these stories connect the virtue of the month. Mrs. Reimer has exposed us to so many wonderful books, by some amazing authors. Thank you for reading to us each week Mrs. Reimer!

Students are allowed to continue to take books out this week, with ALL BOOKS due to the learning commons on Monday June 15.

Butterfly Update!
Room 6 is happy to announce that all of our butterflies have emerged! Over the weekend, we welcomed 7 butterflies. Mrs. Stenbeck removed where the chrysalises hung. Can you see the silk button? Can you see how they're transparent?

Look at the beautiful pattern on our butterflies!
Notice how the sides are symmetrical! Please ask your child to point out all the parts of a butterfly.

Here is the life cycle of a butterfly, can your child describe it to you?
