In preparation for our trip to the Calgary Zoo and the
Penguin Palooza program we have been doing researching on different species
of penguins. We have also incorporated the theme of penguins into our math program.
After reading the book 365 Penguins by Jean-Luc Fromental we used our
math skills to help the family in the story solve their penguin problems. A family
finds a penguin mysteriously delivered to their door every day of the year. At
first the family finds the penguins cute but as they pile up they become a
problem. Feeding and housing all these birds turns into a mathematical problem
which students in our classes were encouraged to solve.
